Why Do Superheroes Wear Capes?
Most children would tie a towel around their neck or tuck a piece of cloth on their shirt pretending to be a superhero. Capes have always been associated with superheroes particularly Superman and Batman. The good news is capes can be customized according to the iconic superhero character that your child adores.
Does a cape provide a superhero with power?
It has been widely accepted that Superman’s red cape is actually the blanket that he was wrapped in when he first came to Earth from planet Krypton. There are different theories that the cape actually helps Superman heal and rejuvenate after he is seriously injured and his powers weakened. The cape is not actually the source of Superman’s power although the cape provides him with protection against fire and bullets. The cape of Supergirl is similarly equipped to Superman’s cape.
Batman is another iconic superhero although he has no superpower. Unlike most of the superheroes in the Justice League, Batman cannot fly. Every part of his suit has a purpose with the cape helping him to glide to safety from a tall building. In some comic books, Batman’s cape is bullet-proof.
The cape of Dr Strange is called the Cloak of Levitation although it is sometimes given another name – Blanket of Death. DrStrange’s cape can perceive and feel things and has rescued him on many critical situations. The cape also helps Dr Strange fly when fighting the enemy.
Robin is best known as Batman’s sidekick. Although Robin is arguably the most famous sidekick in the world of comics, his capabilities are rarely exploited. Robin also has a cape-like Batman that he uses to paraglide to low altitudes.
Meanwhile, there are also popular superheroes who wear capes that do not serve any purpose besides making them look like a superhero. Thor wears a maroon or dark red cape that does not give him any power apart from making his entrances super cool and adding a touch of glamour to his fictional God-like character.
Vision is a synthetic human-robot and one of the superheroes in Marvel’s Avengers. He wears a cape although it is difficult to determine whether he actually wears a suit. Vision does not generate any power from his cape apart from adding a bit of personality to his appearance.
Black Panther’s cape seems to be the coolest. It is designed with a raised collar that looks like a cowl and is beautifully adorned. Since the cape serves no purpose, it was omitted in the movie rendition of Black Panther.
Magneto’s cape is simply a style statement and serves no purpose. The dark colour of his suit works perfectly with his helmet that prevents his brainwaves from being read by telepaths.
Superhero customized capes are the best costumes for a themed party. Your child will look like he is ready to save the world with his cape. However, wearing a superhero costume with a cape is not limited to kids; there are adults too who dress up like the fictional superhero characters.
